Audix VLM™ dynamic mics manage the transients of the drums at close range, while the condensers capture the cymbals and provide a stereo image of the entire kit from overhead. Close Miking
The D6 for kick drum and the i5 for snare are must-haves for every drummer. These are the core of any drum kit and foundational to every groove. Close miking ensures that both will be clearly captured in the mix. The D2 and D4, industry standards for toms and floor toms, are high-SPL dynamic microphones that excel at capturing attack and percussive detail. Close placement helps isolate and control the sound of each drum.
Overhead Miking (Ambient)
Following the "less is more" philosophy, many engineers use just two overhead mics to capture the entire drum kit naturally. The ADX51 pre-polarized condenser microphones—with 14mm gold-sputtered diaphragms and cardioid pickup patterns—are optimized for overhead use. Their high sensitivity and pencil-style form make for easy positioning and phase-coherent stereo capture of the full kit.
The Blend
Combining close and overhead miking ensures clarity and balance, even in large venues with high volumes. The D6 brings out punchy low-end and kick attack, the i5 enhances snare crack and depth, D2 and D4 highlight tom resonance, while ADX51s pick up cymbals and kit ambience. The DP7 ensures sonic integrity and critical presence, regardless of room size or PA system.
